Gryffindor

A lion, in scarlet and gold

You may well be afraid, and you still take the first step.

Gryffindor is the house of people who step forward. In this story it gathers the choices where you acted while the outcome was still uncertain: going first, speaking up for someone, owning the risk of a plan. It is about what you do when you are nervous, not about never being nervous.

Find out where you belong

Eighteen choices, about five minutes, free, no account.

  • Courage
  • Responsibility
  • Initiative

You may feel at home here if…

  • you would rather try and be wrong than wait and wonder
  • you speak up when someone is treated unfairly, even if the room goes quiet
  • you volunteer for the part nobody wants to go first on
  • you admit a mistake out loud instead of hoping it passes

Day to day

On an ordinary day this looks small: raising a hand first, making the awkward phone call, saying “I'll do it” before working out how. People around a Gryffindor tend to start moving sooner, because someone has already gone.

  • Steps forward first
  • Takes responsibility
  • Speaks up when it costs something

What people get wrong

Brave is often read as reckless, or loud. In the story, the Gryffindor option is never the careless one; it is the one that accepts a cost. Quiet people land here as often as outgoing ones.

With the other houses

A Gryffindor brings momentum. What helps in return is a Ravenclaw's question before the leap, a Hufflepuff's check that nobody was left behind, and a Slytherin's eye on where the leap is meant to land.

Asking a companion before you act is not the opposite of courage.

As the Harry Potter books tell it; these are facts of the story world, not part of the quiz.

A fan-made story game: a house here describes the choices you make in one short story, not who you are for good. Take it again another night and the hat may see something else.
